make money writing online
You can make money writing online, especially when you use little personal stories.
Copywriter Chris Orzechowski talks about the impact that stories can make when you include those in your email. Using stories makes people more open to understanding the lesson you try to convey.
He also shares some valuable tips on how you could lay out a story that captures people’s attention.
There’s a noticeable difference when you start injecting stories into your marketing, especially in email.
Using little personal stories make people more open to reading them and more open to understanding the lesson you try to convey.
When you tell someone a story, it does its job of illustrating the importance of what you’re selling.
Start your email with Time-Place Tension where you’re describing the setting when you were giving someone some content.
After starting with time place tension lay out your story.
A form you could use is “Somebody wanted something, so they did this, but then, this happened, so then, they did this, and then they got a result.”
Every story is a little bit different, so there’s no hard and fast rule.
Stories, especially in emails, should be tight.
When writing stories in your emails, edit it down as much as possible until you only have the most important things that move the story along fast.
Hemingway is an app that can help you cut out all the extraneous words.
You can use the Grammarly tool to help you edit your writing.
TRANSCRIPTION: MAKE MONEY WRITING ONLINE – CHRIS ORZECHOWSKI
Today, we’re going to be talking about copywriting, even where we’re going to dive into stories, how to craft a story that sells, and make money writing online.
Today’s guest is Chris Orzechowski.
He’s someone who’s personally helped me develop my skills in copywriting. He’s contributed to generate over 18 million in dollars in sales using words. Some of his clients have included John Assaraf who’s in the movie, The Secret, Factor 75, Sophia Health Institute, and many other people you’ve probably heard of in all sorts of niches.
Without further ado, let’s bring on Chris to the Thriving Launch.
Hey, Thriving Launchers.
Let’s continue talking about how to make money writing online. Chris, are you to launch?
You’re somebody I admire and appreciate as a writer, as a copywriter, and someone that understands the techniques of using words to make sales and to make money writing online.
I know something you like to talk about, and I’ve been following your emails is using story and how important story is for sales.
Make Money Writing Online By Sending Emails With Stories
A Different Delivery Mechanism Allowing You To Make Money Writing Online
Obviously, they have similar approaches, but the different delivery mechanism and the story email crushed the other one.
What I did was I wrote a personal story about someone who had all these issues when they were a kid and how those issues stay with you as you progress through life, and how they affect you now. It illustrates the point we were trying to make to get people on this webinar to sign up so we could sell them our product.
Make Money Writing Online By Making People More Open To Read Your Stories
With simple little things like using those little personal stories, people are more open to reading them. They’re more open to understanding the lessons you’re trying to convey. It’s a lot easier to suck someone in with a story rather than trying to make all these logical points, give reasons why, try to convince them, persuade them, and use all these different tricks.
I’d love to hear from you some points on how to structure a good story. What’s something that makes it compelling?
Make Money Writing Online By Starting Your Story With Time-Place Tension
When you write stories in your emails, the best thing you could do is start with what I like to call Time Place Tension.
When you open up your email, you could say something like, “A few weeks ago, I was sitting in my chair, and something crazy happened.” That’s not the greatest one in the world but what you’re doing is you’re describing your setting where you were. You’re describing the time, giving someone some context, and then you’re introducing a point of conflict that gets people attention, and you want to do that in the first line.
When you start off with Time-Place Tension, people sit up and listen. It opens a loop, and they want to find out what happens next just like a good fiction book
I like to start off with time place tension. If you look at a lot of books, they’ll start this way also. Then from there, you just lay out your story. You explain the situation, what was happening.
Basic Story Structure That Can Help You To Make Money Writing Online
A little form I like to use also is “Somebody wanted something, so they did this, but then, this happened. So then, they did this, and then they got a result.” That’s a basic story structure that you could follow.
Every story’s a little bit different, so there’s no hard and fast rule, but if you keep two of those things in the back of your mind, you usually can’t go wrong.
I love everything that you’re sharing there.
I’m curious. We can create that tension by telling a story. How do we make sure or how do we know that our story is integrating the right pain points or the right elements so it connects with our audience?
Overcoming Struggles Of Learning How To Make Money Writing Online
Let’s say I’m going to write an email about Chris, who wanted to be a good copywriter and he was struggling to make money writing online. He was freelancing, but not getting any sales.
How can I be sure that this story is shared in such a way that my audience will go that to me? So that way, when I get to a place where I’m offering to buy something, they go, “I’m just like Chris, and I want what he had, and clearly, this is the solution.”
There’s one thing I like to do, and it’s a quick little exercise I’m going to give you before you start writing. This can be for individual emails.
Make Money Writing Online By Doing A Little Exercise
What I like to do is I like to do a little graph. It’s like a timeline, and the beginning of a time line is going to be your prospect; where they are now. And then at the end of the timeline, there’s going to be the result they want to get.
If it’s Chris who wants to be a good copywriter, right now, he’s not great at it. He’s struggling. He’s having all these problems. We could list out those problems that Chris is experiencing at the beginning.
And then, the result that he wants is Chris intends to make money writing online. He wants to be well-respected. He wants to have all these clients or whatever your prospects want in the end.
In between, there are going to be a bunch of roadblocks and obstacles that are going to come up along the way.
Make Money Writing Online By Listing Out All The Possible Problems Your Prospects Might Experience
What you want to do is list out; what are all the things and the problems they’re going to encounter on their road from point A to point B right, from where they are now to where they want to be?
And you’re going to have to come up with stories and things that help them get around those obstacles. Obviously, you have products or solutions that can help them get over all these obstacles.
Make Your Stories Relevant To Make Money Writing Online
You’re going to want to use your stories to say, “I remember when I went to something similar to that” or “I remember this happened to me too” or “This happened to someone I know” or, “This happened to someone I worked with. Here’s what they did.” That way, you can make sure all of your stories are landing, and all of your stories are relevant.
You want to ensure you have a clear vision of the journey your prospect is going to go on, and then just make sure your stories align.
Make Money Writing Online By Making People Care About What You’re Saying
When you’re writing these stories, think about it and say, “If I was this person, would I care about what I’m saying right now?”
I would love to hear before we go if there’s one big tip you feel like people need when they go to write their story that we haven’t already talked about?
Let me think about this.
One big tip.
I would say that most people whack poetic, and they try to go way too overboard with the stories they’re telling. Stories in emails especially should be very tight.
Edit Your Stories Down To Make Money Writing Online
If you’re new to this and you’re writing out stories in your emails and doing all these things, what you want to do is you want to try to edit it down as much as possible until you have only the meat and potatoes, the most important things that move the story along fast. Because especially with a medium like an email, your goal is to capture their attention and get them to the page that you want them to click through to perform whatever action it is.
When I critic other people’s works, business owners, the writers I coach, the one thing I usually have to tell all of them is that they’re writing way too much, and they need to tighten their writing up and chop it down.
Tools You Can Use To Make Money Writing Online
There’s an excellent tool to do that. It’s called Hemingway. It’s a free app. It could help you bring down either the reading level of what you’re writing, so it’s a little bit simpler and smoother. Also, it helps you cut out all the extraneous words. That’s a tool I like to point a lot of people because it helps them out.
That’s very cool. It’s great to learn about that tool, and you know what? That tool has been coming up in my mind over and over, so I’m going to go check it out.
Thriving Launchers, I want to give you one more tool I love for writing, and it’s called Grammarly. It’s a great tool.
As you’re writing your stories, and you don’t have an editor on hand, you can use Hemingway and Grammarly. I guarantee you’re going to be a way better writer.
Let’s wrap up. Let’s talk about what we got out of this episode on how to make money writing online.
Connect With People And Make Money Writing Online
For me, every time I talk to Chris, I’m reminded that story sells, and a lot of us have this tendency to want to use teaching and education and yet, what works the best is utilizing stories.
Chris gave us a lot of great tools and resources. Go back and listen to the episode if you need to, but remember. Through stories, you can connect with people, and you can make sales, and you can enroll people in your mission, and have people come along and remember who you are.
Whatever takeaway you got from today’s episode, go and take that. Write and make some transformation happen in people’s lives, and until then, we’ll see you in the next episode.
Keep thriving you all.
